Oscar-winning Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto dies at 71

Sakamoto was also a co-founder of influential electropop band Yellow Magic Orchestra

Ryuichi Sakamoto was the first Japanese musician to receive an Academy Award for Best Original Score.

Ryuichi Sakamoto, the famous Japanese composer who won an Oscar, has died at the age of 71.

His management team announced that the deceased died on March 28.

Prior to this, Sakamoto received treatment for cancer that he had been suffering from for several years.

Born in 1952 in Tokyo, the deceased is known for the song played in the movie ‘Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence’ in 1983.

The deceased won an Oscar for the original music of the film ‘The Last Emperor’ in 1987.

A few years ago, in 2015, Sakamoto produced the original music for the movie ‘The Revenant’.

The music album which was rearranged by the director of Revenant, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu will be released on May 5.

The funeral ceremony was held in private, attended only by close family members.
