Concert organisers must consider venue suitability

Comms minister says govt won’t get involved but notes concertgoers’ gripes

Communications and Digital Minister says he would like to invite concert organisers and promoters to discuss why issues of venue suitability cannot be resolved.

KUALA LUMPUR: Concert organizers in Malaysia should review all considerations in finding the best and most appropriate location to hold their events in the country, said Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

He said while the government will not be involved in this aspect but it has taken note of complaints from concert ticket buyers before.

“… hopefully, at a certain level I would like to invite all the organizers and promoters to come forward and give their views on why this kind of issue cannot be resolved,” he said when asked about the complaints of those who went to the concert about the suitable location to hold the show.

Fahmi said this when met before the “AR Rahman – Secret of Success – Live in Malaysia 2023” concert at the National Stadium, Bukit Jalil here, last night.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail also attended the Oscar-winning Indian music composer’s concert together with Indian High Commissioner to Malaysia BN Reddy.

Asked about his hopes for the 30th anniversary of AR Rahman’s musical tour held in Malaysia, Fahmi said it was a good start for the authorities to see what they could do especially within the existing regulations.

“We understand that in this region, there are several premises that are the locations where mega concerts like this take place.
“So we need to see how concerts like this bring in tourists … which has a positive effect on the economy.”

Fahmi also said he attended a briefing by the Agency for Application for Filming and Performance of Foreign Artists (PUSPAL), which is the agency responsible for granting entry permits to these international artists.

“Thus, we want to see what we can do to streamline the process to make it faster and more efficient and hopefully bring in more tourists,” he said.
