OpenAI may leave Europe if regulations are strict

LONDON: Technology company, OpenAI may consider leaving Europe if it cannot comply with the artificial intelligence (AI) regulations drafted by the European Union (EU).

OpenAI Chief Executive Oegawai, Sam Altman said, before considering withdrawing, OpenAI will try to comply with the rules in Europe when they are set.

He explained that the current draft of the EU AI Act would be overly regulated, but he had heard it would be withdrawn but they were still talking about it.

The EU is working on the first worldwide set of rules to govern AI.
As part of the draft, companies using generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, will have to disclose any copyrighted material used to develop their systems.

EU MPs reached a consensus on the draft act earlier this month.

It will now be debated between representatives of the Parliament, the council and the commission to see the final details of the bill.

General-purpose AI systems are categories proposed by lawmakers to account for AI tools with more than one application, such as generative AI models such as Microsoft’s supported ChatGPT.
