Online gamer lost RM95,700 cheated by ‘Inspektor Maria’

KUALA LUMPUR: A video game streamer lost more than RM95,000 after becoming a victim of fraud by an individual posing as a police officer, yesterday.

Sentul District Police Chief ACP Beh Eng Lain said the 30-year-old woman made five money transfer transactions to separate accounts totaling RM95,700 after receiving a phone call from an individual claiming to be ‘Inspector Maria’ from Bukit Aman.

“At 2pm yesterday, the woman allegedly received a call from the Pos Malaysia Berhad headquarters who told her that she had delivered two ATM (automatic teller machine) cards, a checkbook and a bank token to a certain individual.

“The call was then connected to another individual claiming to be Inspector Maria from Bukit Aman who informed the victim that he was involved in a money laundering syndicate and instructed the victim to make a money transfer transaction to a designated account,” he said in a statement here today.

Beh said the woman later realized she had been tricked after telling her friend about the incident.

“The case is being investigated according to Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating,” he said.
