Noorkumalasari, Sharifah Rose admits appearance is an important factor in being an artist
The ISSUE of talent or looks being more important is often a topic of conversation among art world enthusiasts.
It got hotter when producer Datuk A. Aida was criticized for prioritizing looks over talent.
Discussing the matter further, one by one forum session titled Between Beauty and Talent? Where Are the Credibility Boosters? was held on Monday morning at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, recently.
As one of the panelists of the program, young actress Sharifah Rose thinks that having a charming appearance can pave the way for someone to start venturing into the art field.
“At the beginning of my involvement in the industry I was very worried because I had no experience but still wanted to try. For me it’s true that appearance can be a path-breaker but there needs to be an initiative to continue learning.
“I was once labeled as a ‘wooden’ actor. I use that criticism as a fuel to improve my self-improvement,” she said.
The program was also attended by the Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysian National Film Development Corporation (Finas), Prof. Dr. Md Nasir Ibrahim, director and producer Datuk Yusof Haslam and two other actors namely Noorkumalasari and Hariz Hamdan.
Meanwhile Fahrin Ahmad also moderated the event.
Sharing her experience when she first ventured into acting, Noorkumalasari also agreed that appearance is very important because it is also what the audience wants.
However, if an actor has great talent, the term beautiful can be translated through the quality of the acting delivered.
“The audience wants to see looks and talent, so it cannot be denied that an actor must have a beautiful appearance. Having both is a blessing.
“How can an actor who lacks looks but has great talent still be the main character. See how the Hollywood industry highlights their talents. That beauty can be seen through the characters they portray,” she explained.
Also present at the event were the Chairman of FINAS, YB Senator Datuk Seri Zurainah Musa, publisher Datuk A. Aida, Head of the Communication Cluster of the Center for Media & Communication Studies, UKM, Dr. Ammar Redza Ahmad Faizal and the President of the Journalists & Entertainment Writers Association of Malaysia (WHAM), Datuk Tengku Khalida Tengku Bidin.
This event is organized by Finas as one of the programs in conjunction with the 32nd Malaysian Film Festival (FFM32) in collaboration with WHAM and the School of Media & Communication, UKM.
