New attractions set to thrill Langkawi, Penang visitors

Prepare for breathtaking views at Menara Tower and Halloween scares at The Top

TWO major attractions are now ready to welcome tourists in the two northern islands that have emphasised rejuvenating tourism in their respective economies.

In Langkawi, this Friday, the much-delayed Maha Tower, or Menara Maha, will enjoy a soft opening to the public.

It is a 138-metre-tall steel structure located in Kuah where from the top, there is a bird’s eye view of the scenic surroundings.

This unique tower was initially officiated by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed several years ago. But it was delayed due to bureaucratic issues, Covid-19, and the inability to source materials.

Visitors will be allowed up to the viewing deck at 102.5 metres above sea level. It is the highest point for tourists where they can peek at the Lake of the Pregnant Maiden (Tasik Dayang Bunting) at the nearby Dayang Bunting Island.

The tower will comprise:

Level 40: Telecommunication installations (138 metres)
Level 17: 360 Degrees viewing deck (102.5 metres)
Level 10 – 15: Commercial space (57.5 to 102.5 metres)
Level 8: Sky Restaurant (57.5 metres)
Level 1-8: Multiple retail, food and beverage, a bazaar and function rooms
It is estimated to cost RM100 million, according to reports about the project. This massive project will support the goals of the Langkawi Local Plan 2030, which aims to establish the island as a tourism centre while preserving its flora and fauna.

The overall iconic design is heavily influenced by geometric patterns and minaret structures inherent in Islamic architecture. The tower project is developed jointly by the Langkawi Development Authority (Lada) and Dekinjaya Builders Sdn Bhd.

Ticketing prices range from RM23 to RM54 for various categories.

Meanwhile, in Penang, The Top theme park at Komtar has established a zombie zone for the coming Halloween celebrations next month. It invited the Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng to mark the launching of the attraction which would be held every Friday to Sunday for next month only.

If the demand is strong, the operator may consider extending the attraction. A spokesperson with The Top cited that horror is among the top genres in the country so there are high expectations that the attraction will be a hit among visitors.

The Top since its launch over a decade ago has plans to position itself as the best tourism attraction in Penang. Many of its staffers took the time to undergo training so they can offer horror accounts to thrill the visitors.

Teh hoped that more visitors will come to Komtar due to the attractions at The Top.
