Muslim dating app Muzz loses appeal against Match Group
A Muslim dating app that was ordered to change its name because of similarities to Match.com has recently lost its appeal.
The Court of Appeal upheld a June 2022 ruling that average users would think Muzmatch – now Muzz – is part of the Match Group, which also owns Tinder.
Muzz has criticized the decision, calling the lawsuit “very worrying for other ‘start-ups’ in the dating sector”.
Here are some other details in the ‘feud’ between the two dating apps:
1. Match Group says they are satisfied with the court ruling in their favor.
2. A spokesperson told the BBC: “We have always known that Muzmatch has unfairly profited from our reputation and investment in our app, and unfairly made itself part of the Match Group.”
3. The court did not find a problem with the original decision that there was “a possibility of confusion due to Muzmatch’s use of SEO keywords consisting of the word ‘match'”.
4. Muzz’s founder and CEO, Shahzad Younas, said the punishment was a “tactic” by Match Group to “defend its global dominance”.
5. Muzz launched in England in 2015 as Muzmatch, a dating app specifically for Muslims.
