Mufti supports comedy club closure

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Mufti, Datuk Seri Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor supported the closure of the Crack House Comedy Club Restaurant in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) because it was seen as deliberately insulting Islam.

He said stern action by the authorities should be taken against the club immediately.

According to him, before this, his statement was not very firm against the club involved because he considered the jokes presented were not intentional.

“My previous statement was a bit soft on the club because I think what happened may have been unintentional.

“But after knowing this incident has happened repeatedly, then this is understandable it was deliberately planned to insult Islam.

“Therefore, I support the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to act harshly against the club as the offense committed by it is very serious and can affect the stability of the country.

“The club needs to be closed so that it is a lesson to all parties,” he said when contacted on Friday.

On Thursday, Wan Salim asked the authorities to implement certain guidelines and controls so that the owners and visitors of the club always maintain moral and religious boundaries.

He said the Islamic religious authorities, including the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) and the religious department should advise the Muslim community to always respect the purity of their religion and not be used as toys or jokes.

He added that as a religion that suits human nature, Islam does not oppose entertainment including comedy or jokes and does not require its followers to be always serious so that there is no space to relax and recreate.

However, the jokes made should not be exaggerated especially those involving serious issues such as religion.

Previously, DBKL took action to temporarily suspend the operation of the club’s premises immediately following the issue of a woman’s contagion insulting the sanctity of Islam.

Last Saturday, a video showed a woman taking off her hijab and baju kurung on social media, inviting public outrage.

The woman, Siti Nuramira Abdullah took to the stage and introduced herself besides claiming to be a Malay Muslim woman and memorizing 15 verses of the Quran.

As a result of the action, the woman and her boyfriend, V Alexander Navin were remanded by the police to assist in the investigation.
