The honour from the American Film Institute is the latest in a career stretching 40 years with too many highlights to count

AFI, the American Film Institute will soon be conferring Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh with another honorific, a Doctorate of Fine Arts degree honoris causa for contributions of distinction to the art of the moving image, making her the first Asian artist to receive the honour.

She will be recognised during the AFI Conservatory’s commencement ceremony on Saturday, August 13, at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

Yeoh is easily the most internationally successful Malaysian actor, with more than 70 acting credits over the course of a 40 year acting career, ranging from a string of awesome Hong Kong action movies like Supercop and Tai Chi Master, to Hollywood blockbusters such as Tomorrow Never Dies (where she was a Bond girl) and Crazy Rich Asians.

Yeoh recently celebrated her 60th birthday on August 6.

Lawrence Herbert, AFI Trustee Emeritus, will also be receiving a Doctorate of Communication Arts degree honoris causa alongside Yeoh.

In a press release on Friday (May 5), AFI President and CEO Bob Gazzale, said, “Michelle Yeoh and Lawrence Herbert have inspired the world with their remarkable talents.”

“Though both of these trailblazers have proven impact in vastly different ways, it is their shared dedication to the art of the moving image that provides this proud moment for AFI to shine a proper light upon their gifts given us.”

Angela Bassett, Mel Brooks, Clint Eastwood, Jodie Foster, James Earl Jones, Spike Lee, Helen Mirren, Quentin Tarantino, John Williams, and many, many other respected figures in US entertainment have also received the honour.
