Michelle Yeoh makes Elle magazine’s ‘Women in Hollywood’ list
With a long list of accolades and recognition, Yeoh is described as a pioneer in Hollywood
ELLE Magazine always highlights the most influential women who have been inspiring the Hollywood industry, including actresses, producers, directors, and even singers. The 2022 lineup shows just that.
According to the publication, the 2022 batch of women was unique, each having a distinct individual trade.
“If there is one thing that unites this incredible group of women, whose work spans genres and continents, it’s that they are all fiercely determined to reach their dreams,” said Elle in an introduction piece.
A total of eight women were selected for the feature, including Olivia Wilde, Issa Rae, Anne Hathaway, Zoe Kravitz, Sydney Sweeney, Ariana DeBose, Sigourney Weaver, and Michelle Yeoh herself, the only Southeast Asian in the ensemble.
The piece by Elle described Yeoh as a person who is best at defying expectations, both on and offscreen.
Considered to be the ‘trailblazer’ of the group, the piece continues by listing Yeoh’s long list of works, including mentions of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), Memoirs of a Geisha (2005), and Crazy Rich Asians (2018).
Nonetheless, Yeoh’s most particularly moving moment in her career was during one of her latest works, Everything Everywhere All At Once, which came out this year.
Speaking on the intensity of her role, Yeoh mentioned how she was praised by the public for what is described as the performance of a lifetime. Relating more to the older generation, Yeoh added that the film gave her the privilege of being reintroduced to an entirely new generation.
“I have younger people come up to me and say, ‘You’ve changed my life. You made me realise that there are so many things that I can do,” she said in an interview with Elle.
During the interview, Yeoh also talked about believing in herself, facing her fears head-on, and the importance of giving more opportunities to women in Hollywood.
“I did not set out to fight against stereotypes; I only forged that path because I didn’t want to be put in a box,” said Yeoh when speaking about her ability to push the standards that were set in Hollywood.
“We cannot allow people to nudge us. I know I am capable of more, so let me prove it to you. I’m like a pit bull. I’m going to defeat you. I’m just going to find a way and work until I get over it.
“We as women are just asking for equal opportunity. Let us show what we can do,” she added.
