Michael Jordan’s ‘Last Dance’ shoes are expected to break the auction record

A PAIR of Michael Jordan’s shoes known as the ‘Last Dance’ is expected to be the most expensive shoes auctioned in history.

According to Sotheby’s auction center, the bid for the Air Jordan XIII shoes reached US$1.8 million (RM7.9 million) just a few hours after the auction started.

That value far surpasses the record for another Jordan shoe, Nike Air Ships, which was auctioned in 2021 for US$1.47 million (RM6.48 million).

The ‘Last Dance’ shoes are expected to reach US$4 million (RM17.63 million) on the last day of bidding, which is April 11.

The basketball star wore the Air Jordan XIII during his last championship season with the Chicago Bulls in 1997 to 1998.

At that time he managed to get 37 points in the Second Game of the 1998 NBA Finals series that gave the Bulls a 93-88 victory over the Utah Jazz.

The Bulls ended up winning the tournament which sparked a ‘Last Dance’ documentary series in 2020 about Jordan’s final season with the team.

It was also Jordan’s sixth NBA championship and the fifth time he was named NBA Most Valuable Player.

Immediately after the Second Game victory, Jordan gave the shoes to the locker room attendant as a reward for finding his missing jacket, Sotheby’s auction house said in a statement.

These ‘Bred’ Air Jordans, short for ‘black and red’, are the only complete pair of shoes worn by Jordan in the NBA finals and have been authenticated, Sotheby’s said.
