Met Gala host Anna Wintour names co-chairs, theme for this year’s exhibition

The 2023 Met Gala will pay tribute to the late designer Karl Lagerfeld

THE 2023 Met Gala, an annual exclusive fashion exhibition for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, will be co-hosted by Penélope Cruz, Dua Lipa, Roger Federer, Michaela Coel, and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.

As co-chairs, these individuals will serve as ambassadors for the event and provide input on the guest list, decor, and overall direction of the event, which is invitation-only and has a ticket price of US$35,000 (RM150,780).

This year’s theme for the fashion event is ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty’, in honour of the late designer. Karl Lagerfeld was a German fashion designer and creative director who left a lasting impact on the fashion industry.

He was the creative director for luxury fashion houses Chanel, Fendi, and Chloé before his death in 2019. Lagerfeld was known for his ability to continuously reinvent the aesthetic of the brands he worked for, and for his ability to bring a modern vision to traditional fashion houses.

He was celebrated for his creativity, his attention to detail, and his distinctive personal style, which included dark sunglasses and fingerless gloves.

Lagerfeld’s designs were worn by some of the most famous and influential people in the world, and his death was widely mourned by the fashion industry.

Typically held during the first Monday in the month of May, celebrities will honour Lagerfeld’s legacy by following the gala’s dress code, which is also “in honour of Karl”.

Vogue suggests that attendees can take the “most authentic approach” by wearing an archival look from one of the labels Lagerfeld led, opting for modern-day looks by Chanel or Fendi, or dressing à la Lagerfeld, referencing his Birman cat Choupette.

The Costume Institute’s accompanying exhibition, also titled “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”, will feature around 150 creations from the designer to “explore [his] stylistic language”, according to a September 2022 Vogue announcement.

The exhibition will include pieces from Lagerfeld’s time as a designer and creative director for brands such as Fendi, Chloe, and Chanel, along with pieces from his shorter times at Balmain and Patou.

Original sketches by Lagerfeld will also be on display. The exhibition’s interior was designed by architect Tadao Ando, who was previously commissioned by Lagerfeld to design a house that was never built.

All four of the co-chairs have taken to social media to express their excitement for the event.

Federer, for example, shared the Met’s recent video about the occasion and co-chairs on his Instagram Story and wrote in the caption, “Anna, thanks for always being there for my family.

“So many great memories. I can’t wait to share another amazing evening together at the Met Gala.”
