Malaysia successfully won a seat on the Council of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)
MALAYSIA was selected to sit as a member of the Council of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in the 2022 Plenipotentiary Conference for the term 2023-2026.
Malaysia is one of the member states of the Asia and Australasia zones competing for 13 places representing the respective zones. More than 180 countries around the world attend ITU sessions.
Malaysia got 147 votes out of 180 votes and ranked fifth.
The decision during the 2022 Plenipotentiary Conference which started from 26 September to 14 October 2022 in Bucharest, Romania is an honor and responsibility for Malaysia as a leading country in the field of telecommunications and digital economy in the Southeast Asian region.
We have globally influential industry players and the government is also always committed to forming stronger bilateral relations with ITU member countries.
This victory reflects Malaysia’s recognition by the ITU and its member countries of Malaysia’s cooperation in the field of telecommunications and the digital economy around the world.
I am optimistic that this recognition will be able to further strengthen the country’s development in the field of Telecommunications, and the digital economy in line with the intention of the Malaysian Digital Economy Blueprint (MyDIGITAL) in addition to preserving the country’s interests in global issues related to the digital divide and cyber security.
This success is the result of the efforts of the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia (K-KOMM), the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Wisma Putra) in seeking support at the international level.
Malaysia also expresses its highest appreciation to all member countries, strategic partners and telecommunications network providers in Malaysia.
Malaysia has been a member of ITU since 1958 and we are always actively involved in various activities of member countries. In fact, we are also committed to supporting ITU’s aspirations to create better connectivity and be able to benefit the global community and Malaysian families from digital innovation.
Malaysia’s hope as a responsible and committed Council Member is to continue to work with ITU and fellow member countries for the mission of creating an information society in line with the Sustainable Development Goals , broadband regulation and matters related to network security and information technology services as well as communication which is the focus of the government and the private sector at the international level.
