LTdL 2022: Stage 7 finish at Gunung Raya cancelled for safety reasons
Route from Kuah, ending in Kuah will be used, race organisers say
LANGKAWI – The route for Stage 7 of the 2022 Le Tour de Langkawi initially planned for today has been altered due to bad weather conditions, according to race organisers.
In a statement late last night, the race’s president commissaire Wayne Pomario has agreed and decided that Stage 8 route that starts from Kuah and ends in Kuah tomorrow will be used for today’s race instead.
“Following meetings with the local authorities which include the Road Works Department, Langkawi District Office and Langkawi District Traffic Safety Committee, it was decided that the Stage 7 finish at the summit of Gunung Raya is cancelled due to concerns on safety of riders, teams, race entourage and the public,” read the statement.
The announcement, which was made on the official Le Tour de Langkawi Facebook account, further clarified that the cancellation was made due to the landslides which occurred at four locations in Gunung Raya.
“As such, the president commissaire has agreed that Stage 8 route will be used for Stage 7 race.”
The penultimate stage will start at 2pm and is expected to end at 4.30pm.
The Malaysian Civil Defence Force today confirmed that areas affected by floods were Kg Teluk Yu, Kg Kilim and Kg Telaga Ayer Hangat in Ayer Hangat; Kg Belanga Pecah in Kuah; Bukit Kemboja and Sg Melaka in Padang Matsirat; and Empangan Padang Saga in Ulu Melaka.
It was also reported that landslides occurred in Ulu Melaka and Jalan Gunung Raya while trees were uprooted in the Ulu Melaka, Ayer Hangat, Kuah and Bohor districts.
The original Stage 7 route features three intermediate sprints at Telaga Harbour, Teluk Yu and Kuah before heading for category 3 climb at Lebuh Langkawi and the Hors climb to the summit of Gunung Raya.
