Lam Thye published a biography of his life story

KUALA LUMPUR: Community activist, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye appeared with his first biography titled ‘Aura Lee Lam Thye’.

Lam Thye, who hails from Menglembu, Perak, said the book shows the twists and turns of his life starting as the Executive Secretary of the National Union of Trade Workers (NUCW) until he contested and became a Member of the State Legislative Assembly (ADUN) at the age of 23 before being active as a community activist.

According to the former Bukit Nanas assemblyman and 76-year-old Bukit Bintang Member of Parliament, the book was not written to raise his name alone but can be a source of reference and inspiration for them or young people who want to dabble in professional fields including politics and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

“After 21 years of serving as a representative of the people, I finally announced my retirement in 1990, that’s when the challenge began.

“In this book I answered all the questions and accusations that I was a traitor to the party I represented at the time,” he told Sinar Harian.

Lam Thye said that after leaving the world of politics, his heart was still with the people and the local community, which is why he continued to operate his community service center located in Jalan Tun Razak at that time.

“The first NGO I joined was the Malaysian Drug Prevention Association (Pemadam) in 1992, followed by the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) in 1992.
“A lot of my time is spent with volunteer activities, and I’m even often invited to meet parents and teachers to give talks at school about the dangers of getting involved with drug faeces,” he said.

It is understood that his involvement in NGOs is evident when he is involved in helping the underprivileged and crime prevention activities through the Eco World Foundation and the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF).

“Crime and criminal behavior is something very serious, MCPF is very active in conducting various crime prevention efforts in collaboration with the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM),” said Lam Thye.

Lam Thye added that his involvement in the community continued through the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) which greatly helped highlight workplace safety and health issues in the public and private sectors.

“Every employee is entitled to a safe work space and many employers are beginning to realize the need to create and maintain a safe work environment,” he said.
