King Charles named Prince Edward the Duke of Edinburgh
Britain’s KING Charles has named his younger brother, Prince Edward, as Duke of Edinburgh, handing over the title once held by their late father, Prince Philip.
Buckingham Palace in a statement released on Friday announced that Edward, who is 59 years old, is the latest member of the English royal family to be given such a title following Charles who will be installed as King of Britain following the death of their mother, Queen Elizabeth.
The eldest son of King Charles, Prince William, who will also inherit the royal throne, is named Prince of Wales.
While the children of Prince Harry who chose to withdraw from the royal family received the title of prince and princess based on the country’s royal protocol.
Edward’s new title was awarded to him following his taking over his late father’s role, mainly involving charitable works.
“The new Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are very proud to continue Prince Philip’s legacy of promoting opportunities for young people from all backgrounds to achieve their aspirations,” said Buckingham Palace, which also referred to Edward’s wife, Sophie as the Duchess of Edinburgh.
Prince Philip held the title of Duke of Edinburgh from his marriage to the late Queen Elizabeth in 1947 until her death in 2021.
Queen Elizabeth also breathed her last on September 9, 2022 at the age of 96.
