JAKARTA: The President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, expressed his condolences and sympathy to the royal family, the government and the people of the United Kingdom (UK) on the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, a queen admired and loved by many,” said the President, better known as Jokowi, via Twitter today.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi was at the British Embassy in Kuningan, South Jakarta, to pay respects and sign the book of honor.

Retno’s arrival was greeted by Ambassador Owen Jenkins.

Retno, via his official Twitter account, said Queen Elizabeth II was an “inspiration for generations to come”.

“On behalf of the people of Indonesia, I signed the condolence book and conveyed my condolences and sympathy on the death of Queen Elizabeth II,” added Retno.

According to the embassy, ​​the flag at the embassy will be flown at half-mast as a sign of respect.

“The death of Queen Elizabeth II is a very sad moment. Throughout her reign, she was an example to us of the meaning of service and devotion,” said Jenkins on Twitter.

The ambassador also thanked and was moved by the messages and speeches from the Indonesian people.

Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, died at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland on Thursday.
