JFKL Talk Series: a writer on translating Murakami’s works

Episode 4 of the programme features freelance translator, writer Yap Yeut Ngor

Murakami began his literary career with his first novel, Hear the Wind Sing, in 1979.

HARUKI Murakami is one of Japan’s most celebrated authors and translators.

The now 74-year-old Japanese novelist has published 14 long novels, dozens of short stories collections, over 100 essays, travel writings and non-fiction.

They have been translated into over 50 languages and sold millions of copies in Japan and internationally.

The Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur (JFKL) Talk Series is a programme initiated to reach out to everyone and introduce more about Japan through the lenses of professionals in various fields.

The fourth episode of JFKL Talk Series titled “Reading and Translating Haruki Murakami” will be streamed live via JFKL’s official Facebook page on Sunday, February 26 at 3pm.

This new episode will be featuring Yap Yuet Ngor (Ye Hui), a freelance translator and column writer.

Born in Kuala Lumpur, approximately 300 of her translations have been released through publishers in Hong Kong, including three Murakami books.

Besides being a translator of Murakami for Chinese readers, she is also a researcher on the topic.

In 1979, Murakami began his literary career with his first novel, Hear the Wind Sing, and won the Gunzo Literary Prize for new writers.

More works followed after that, including popular titles such as Norwegian Wood, and 1Q84.
