“Jill (Biden) and I send our condolences to those who lost loved ones in Seoul.

“We are also saddened by the people of South Korea and hope for a speedy recovery for all those injured.

“The bond between our two countries and the relationship between our people is stronger than ever.

“The US stands with South Korea at this tragic time,” he said in a statement.

A total of 149 people, including two foreigners, were confirmed dead as of early Sunday morning while 76 others were injured and 57 of them were serious, according to fire authorities.

The death toll is expected to rise and the exact cause of the incident is still unknown.
