IRENE Cara, who won the Oscar for Best Original Song in 1984, for the hit song ‘What A Feeling’, which was the theme song of 80s classic ‘Flashdance’, has died. She was 63.
Her publicist confirmed her death on social media, saying she died at her home in Florida. The cause of death is still unknown.
This is the absolute worst part of being a publicist. I can't believe I've had to write this, let alone release the news. Please share your thoughts and memories of Irene. I'll be reading each and every one of them and know she'll be smiling from Heaven. She adored her fans. – JM pic.twitter.com/TsC5BwZ3fh

Cara co-wrote ‘What A Feeling’ with Giorgio Moroder and Keith Forsey for ‘Flashdance’, which starred Jennifer Beals as a welder by day and a burlesque dancer by night. The dance numbers would be accompanied by songs of the era.
Cara also won a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1984 for ‘What a Feeling’.
She also sang the theme song for another popular 1980s film, Fame, which she also starred in.
Cara’s work for that movie earned her Grammy award nominations for best new artist and best female pop artist.
Irene Cara, you inspired me more than you could ever know. Your songwriting and vocals created pure energy that will never cease. You also defined an era that is so close to my heart. pic.twitter.com/7cpCUY1aI1

She started training as a child in music, dance and singing, and appeared on stage and on television, including on ‘The Tonight Show’ with Johnny Carson, which at the time was a sought after achievement, especially for someone so young.
