‘I’m really surprised’: Tan Chui Mui on receiving FFM32 best actress nod

‘Barbarian Invasion’ was also nominated for two other awards – Best Poster Design and Best Make-up

WHEN the 32nd Malaysian Film Festival (FFM) nominations were unveiled yesterday, director Tan Chui Mui was bemused to find herself nominated for Best Actress for her latest film, ‘Barbarian Invasion’.

Tan said, “I am really surprised to be nominated only as best actress. I am not too impressed by my own acting, and I was expecting nominations in [the] director or screenplay [categories]. Anyway, I had already been asked by a few directors for acting in their films…”

“Looks like I’m having a mid-life career change,” Tan laughed.

Other nominees for Best Actress including Sangeeta Krishnasamy (Juang), Mei Fen Lim (Prebet Sapu), Bernice Chauly (Spilt Gravy) and Sara Ali (Air Force the Movie: Selagi Bernyawa).

The awards ceremony will take place on December 2 at Encore Melaka.

Tan added, “Both Sangeetha and I were in Joe Hasham’s acting for beginners workshop a long time ago. And we were partners for the performance so we are going to drive to Malacca together.”

Apart from Best Actress, ‘Barbarian Invasion’ was also nominated for two other awards – Best Poster Design and Best Make-up.

The film is showing now in 33 cinemas across the country. Without the protection of Finas Mandatory Screening Scheme, this week’s box office is very crucial or it may cease showing next week.

Fellow nominee Fen Lim also showed support in an Instagram post, “Please go to [the] cinema to watch ‘Barbarian Invasion’, especially [since] we have a long weekend this week.”
