‘I feel oppressed’ – Termination of Finas CEO’s contract, Md Nasir does not rule out the involvement of cronies

The father of actress Anzalna Nasir, who is Prof Md Nasir Ibrahim, admitted to being surprised after receiving a letter of termination as Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysian National Film Development Corporation (Finas).

According to Md Nasir, he was not given the opportunity to discuss or defend himself if the decision made involved a breach of integrity or a criminal case.

“I was able to find out that this termination was agreed upon by the members of the Board of Directors (Finas). But I was never called to discuss or informed about this in advance. So I feel oppressed when this happens.

“If there is a problem of integrity or crime, I have the right to be called to defend myself. But it didn’t happen. So I was surprised by this decision,” he told reporters.

Md Nasir was met during a press conference held in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.

Md Nasir added that he also did not rule out the existence of crony elements in the Finas administration who did not agree with his stance thus making it difficult for them to cooperate.

“Personally, I do not reject the existence of cronies. These things are not good, but they are bound to happen in any organization.

“There are people who find it difficult to accept criticism. The simplest example is when I reprimand the staff who are in the cafe during working hours. I reprimand to improve.

“This press conference aims to clear my name. I don’t want anyone to think it’s false because it happened within 24 hours,” he said.

Talking about personal plans, Md Nasir wants to take a break after serving for 1 year and 7 months but is still open to working together in the development of the local film industry.

“I am satisfied with this decision. Give me time to rest first.

“I am also open to working with any party for the advancement of our film industry. I am very happy to contribute,” he explained.

Md Nasir started his service on 1 November 2021 and is expected to end on 31 October.

He received the termination letter from Finas Chairman Datuk Kamil Othman on May 31 at 4.30pm.

Earlier, the art industry was rocked by the termination of Md Nasir’s service after he received a 24-hour notice on Wednesday evening and effective June 1.

The National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia (Finas) also confirmed that it has terminated Prof Md Nasir’s contract as Chief Executive Officer of Finas with effect from today.

According to Finas in a press release, the decision was taken to restructure or recalibrate policies , programs and creative activities to produce quality local films.

Previously, the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (KKMM) announced the appointment of Md Nasir as Chief Executive Officer of Finas for a period of two years with effect from 31 October 2021 to 20 October 2023.

His appointment replaces Ahmad Idham Ahmad Nadzri who ends his duties on October 15, 2021.
