Hawana 2022 platform strengthens the country’s journalism ecosystem – Annuar
KUALA LUMPUR: The National Journalist Day (Hawana) 2022 celebration is not only in recognition of the role of local journalists but also a platform to strengthen the country’s journalism ecosystem, said Communications and Multimedia Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa.
He said Hawana 2022 which would take place on May 29 in Melaka would be attended by local journalists and media practitioners as well as representatives from several neighboring countries including Indonesia which opened up space for the exchange of knowledge and experience in the field.
According to Annuar, Hawana is also the highest recognition to media practitioners who play a very important role in helping the development of the nation state.
“The task and role of this field of journalism is very synonymous with helping the development of the country, the struggle of the country and the nation … if we can celebrate many other professions, it is not appropriate that we do not give the highest recognition to our journalists.
“For example, Hawana which can be implemented for at least three days with filling covers all aspects and elements of the world of journalism that can evoke a broader public understanding of the role as well as the world of journalism,” he said.
He said this to reporters at the Media Practitioner Appreciation Ceremony here today which was also attended by the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National News Agency of Malaysia (Bernama) Roslan Ariffin.
The ceremony to celebrate media practitioners and journalists was also attended by heads of agencies under the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia as well as the editor-in-chief of local media organizations.
Hawana 2022 is scheduled to be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob while Ikatan Setia Kawan Wartawan Malaysia Indonesia (ISWAMI) and Bernama will be the main movers of Hawana 2022 which also involves other organizations, associations and media practitioners.
Meanwhile, Annuar also suggested that local media agencies form more professional collaborations with various international news agencies, especially regional countries, to increase added value to the country’s journalism ecosystem.
He said Bernama’s success in signing a cooperation agreement with the Vietnamese news agency was a proud achievement and needed to be expanded and emulated.
“Our (local) media cannot just be guided by each other alone … I want to see more of our journalists undergoing placements with external media so that we can see the development of external media as well as exchange ideas, experiences and news material. Cooperation with external media as well. “can further deepen the country’s knowledge of journalism. Such a network of cooperation needs to be done immediately,” he said.
Annuar said Bernama, for example, had established cooperation with the Indonesian and Vietnamese media and he hoped for more cooperation with the media from various countries.
