Frightening, funny, or family-friendly: check out these Halloween titles on Netflix

The horror genre is one of the most popular in Southeast Asia, and Netflix has the whole range – from scary to funny – ready for hungry fans

HORROR is one of the most beloved genres across Asia, and fans are increasingly turning to Netflix for their fright fix – whether that’s terrifying ghost tales, laugh-out-loud horror comedies, or family-friendly stories.

In the Asia-Pacific region, viewing of horror content on Netflix grew 20% from 2020 to 2021. Over the same period, viewing hours of horror content in Southeast Asia increased even more, by over 40%.

As Halloween approaches, Netflix shares some of its members’ favourite titles (as revealed in this week’s Top 10 today), some new series launching this week, and some of the biggest horror hits from across Asia-Pacific this year.

The Watcher

After the Brannock family moves into what was supposed to be their suburban dream home, it quickly becomes a living hell. Ominous letters from someone calling themself ‘The Watcher’ are just the beginning as the neighborhood’s sinister secrets come spilling out. Inspired by the true story of the infamous ‘Watcher’ house in New Jersey.

The School for Good & Evil

Best friends Sophie and Agatha find themselves on opposing sides of an epic battle when they’re swept away into an enchanted school where aspiring heroes and villains are trained to protect the balance between Good and Evil. Based on the epic international best-selling series by Soman Chainani.

The Curse of Bridge Hollow

A father (Marlon Wayans) and his teenage daughter (Priah Ferguson) are forced to team up and save their town after an ancient and mischievous spirit causes Halloween decorations to come to life and wreak havoc.

The Stranger

This Australian film revolves around two strangers who strike up a conversation on a long journey. One, a suspect in an unsolved missing person’s case; the other, an undercover operative on his trail. Their uneasy friendship is at the core of this tightly wrought thriller, based on the true story of one of the largest investigations and undercover operations in Australia.

The Midnight Club

At a hospice with a mysterious history, the eight members of the Midnight Club meet each night at midnight to tell sinister stories – and to look for signs of the supernatural from the beyond. Based on the beloved Christopher Pike book series, and brought to life by the creators of The Haunting of Hill House. A new horror series from Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy’s Intrepid Pictures (The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass) and Leah Fong, based on the creative work of bestselling author Christopher Pike.

In Cabinet of Curiosities, acclaimed Academy Award-winning filmmaker and creator, executive producer and co-showrunner Guillermo del Toro has curated a collection of unprecedented and genre-defining stories meant to challenge our traditional notions of horror. From macabre to magical, gothic to grotesque or classically creepy, these eight equally sophisticated and sinister tales (including two original stories by del Toro) are brought to life by a team of writers and directors personally chosen by del Toro.
