KUALA LUMPUR: The death of Queen Elizabeth II as the longest reigning ruler in the history of the modern world certainly leaves behind various histories and services of her majesty to the countries of the Commonwealth.
Looking back at the history of Malaya, Senior Lecturer of the History Department of the University of Malaya (UM), Azharuddin Mohamed Dali told about the relationship between Queen Elizabeth II and Malaya when she was installed as the Reigning King in 1952.
He said, four Sultans representing Malaya agreed to attend the coronation of his majesty at that time even though Malaya had not yet achieved independence.
“I think one of the most important things to have a direct impact on this event, is our position as a Commonwealth country.
“This is directly related to the developments that have taken place since our country achieved independence in 1957. A little history related to Queen Elizabeth, we in Malaya had not achieved independence when she was appointed or held the government in 1952.
“During his enthronement, there were representatives from Malaya, namely four Sultans, who went to London to celebrate his enthronement day,” he explained.
Azharuddin added that the four Sultans are the Sultan of Kelantan, the Sultan of Johor, the Sultan of Perak and the Sultan of Selangor.
Commenting on the figure of Queen Elizabeth II, during her tenure on the throne, she is considered to have succeeded in uniting the Commonwealth of Nations until now.
“Her Majesty seems to be able to unify and ensure that the Commonwealth of Nations achieve equality even though the standards between the countries are different. But when the meetings and gatherings take place, His Majesty shows that there is no difference (in standards) between all the member states,” he explained further.
He added that the legacy left behind by his late Majesty is big enough to ensure that the Commonwealth continues to function for the good of the member countries.
“I think this is the most important thing that allows the Commonwealth to continue to exist today.
“We have just completed the 2022 Commonwealth Games, this directly proves that the Commonwealth still has a function until today, this is the most important contribution also given by the late Queen Elizabeth II,” he said again.
Although the reins of government are now held by King Charles III, Azharuddin added, he believed the British Royal Family was able to adapt as the late had done before.
Queen Elizabeth II, who holds the record as the longest reigning monarch in modern world history, breathed her last at noon on Thursday (local time).
Her Majesty died at the age of 96 at Balmoral Palace, Scotland, Buckingham Palace reports.
At the same time as the announcement, flags in the United Kingdom (UK) and the rest of the Commonwealth were lowered to half-mast, while all television and radio broadcast schedules were updated, in honor of her passing.
