For the aristocracy, the RM219 per meter shroud is now on the market
JAKARTA: Perhaps, it has never occurred to most of us that the shroud for wrapping the corpse also has different grades.
Our guess is that it is a white shroud whose price is not that expensive.
However, in today’s modern world, shrouds for corpses are actually being sold at very unusual prices.
Defined as the shroud of a nobleman’s body, a trader in Indonesia stole the limelight following the sale of which is understood to have received an extraordinary response, especially from the members of Parliament of the neighboring country.
Based on a report by the Indonesian news portal Suara.com, the woman named Suryani sells a luxurious shroud at a price of 750,000 rupiah (RM219) per semester.
She said, in the Jeneponto area, South Sulawesi region, the shroud is called a tope.
Tope is not only used to cover the remains, in fact, the material is also used to produce clothes such as robes, hijabs, bags and fans.
“The price reaches Rupiah 1.7 million (RM498) when it becomes a shirt. Many of the buyers are members of the House of Representatives (DPR),” said Suryani.
Suryani said, the shroud is made of natural cotton that is spun into thread.
“The production process takes two months to sew one garment, so it is sold expensively,” she said.
Suryani said, the shroud was used to wrap the remains of nobles, thus causing most people to switch to white cloth due to the significant price difference.
Shrouds or tope are produced in the province of Kelara, Jeneponto by around 50 trained local women.
Suryani’s effort to sell tope is because he wants to continue the use of the shroud which he describes as almost outdated.
