
Floods: Lamborghini donates over US$1 million to the Emilia-Romagna region in Italy
MOSCOW: Italian supercar maker Lamborghini will donate EUR1 million (US$1.08 million) to help flood victims in the country’s Emilia-Romagna region, Sputnik reported, citing the company on Tuesday.
“Automobili Lamborghini supports the campaign ‘ Un aiuto per l’Emilia-Romagna ‘ through a donation of EUR1 million Euros.
“The company responded to the terrible events in the region by participating in ‘ Un aiuto per l’Emilia-Romagna ,’ a fundraising campaign promoted by the Agency for Regional Security and Civil Protection.
“The funds will be donated with the coordination of local authorities to support the affected communities, with a particular focus on environmental rehabilitation projects due to hydrogeological instability,” Lamborghini said in a statement.
The carmaker also announced the cancellation of the Giro Event – the company’s 60th anniversary celebration which was to be held from May 24 to 28 from Rome to Bologna.
Lamborghini CEO and Chairman Stephan Winkelmann said: “the company is “always attentive and sensitive to the region in which we operate and through this concrete gesture we express our solidarity and closeness with the communities affected by the environmental emergency.”
Last week, another Italian supercar manufacturer, Ferrari also announced a donation of EUR1 million in aid to flood victims in the region.
Formula 1 has also announced a donation of EUR1 million to the Regional Security and Civil Protection Agency of the Emilia-Romagna Region to help communities affected by the floods in addition to canceling the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at the Imola Circuit scheduled for May 20 to 21.
Heavy rains hit Emilia-Romagna more than a week ago, causing floods and landslides in more than 30 towns and villages.
At least 15 people were killed in the natural disaster.
According to local authorities, 43 settlements are still flooded while about 23,000 people are still in evacuation centers.
On Tuesday, Italy’s Council of Ministers approved an aid package worth more than EUR2 billion to help flood victims.
