Filming in Borneo must obtain a permit from the state government – Finas

KOTA KINABALU: Local art industry activists, especially those who are filming in the Borneo area, i.e. in Sabah and Sarawak, are reminded to obtain permits from their respective state government agencies first.

Director of the National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia (Finas) Borneo Mohammad Rizal Mohamed Yunus said that although the production has a license issued by Finas, they are also subject to the rules set by the state.

“In order to carry out filming it is necessary to have a Finas license but when entering Sabah they need to obtain a permit from the state government to ensure that every filming is controlled especially in areas that require a permit,” he told reporters in conjunction with the Kupi-Kupi Borneo 2023 Program here today .

Mohammad Rizal said the decision by the state government was an effort to control the content of films produced by productions, especially if they involve filming in tourist areas.

In the meantime, Mohammad Rizal said Finas has also extended the period until Dec 31 this year to productions with Enterprise status to upgrade to Sdn Bhd companies in addition to having time to obtain capital of RM50,000 as has been set as a condition to obtain a Finas license.

Regarding the program, he said it aims to channel knowledge and provide a space for creative arts practitioners in Sabah to share experiences and exchange opinions.
