Fence signs, emotional phrases flood social media after Donald Trump’s trial
NEW YORK: Throwing fence signs and emotional phrases related to the arrest of the former president of the United States (US) Donald Trump circulated throughout social media since he was arrested and tried.
This follows Trump’s trial on 34 charges including falsifying business records and secret payments in 2016 to pornographic actress Stormy Daniels.
Looking at Twitter, many individuals including political leaders, celebrities and users on Twitter ‘descended the field’ to the platform to support and some even insulted the former president.
There are a few who claim the action is seen as an attempt to bring Trump down, while others say they hope Trump goes to jail.
Senator Mitt Romney posted a link to his statement on Twitter, which read, “I believe President Trump’s character and behavior make him unfit for office.
“However, I believe New York prosecutors have sought to achieve felony charges to fit a political agenda.
“No one is above the law, not even the former president, but everyone deserves equal treatment under the law.
“The prosecutor’s outrageous actions set a dangerous precedent for criminalizing political opponents and damaging public trust in our justice system,” wrote the former presidential candidate.
Romney went on to state how the charges would be reviewed by a jury, that he believed American voters would “make their own judgments about the former President’s political future” and that “all elected leaders should “prevent violence and outrage.”
New York Senator and Senator Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said: “I believe that Donald Trump will have a fair trial that follows the facts and the law. There is no place in our justice system for any outside influence or intimidation in the legal process. During the trial, protest is an American right, but all protests must be peaceful.”
Meanwhile, billionaire Elon Musk responded to the senator’s tweet with a statement about the bipartisan criminal justice system.
“In order to avoid losing the trust of the American public, it is important that our justice system sees the Democratic and Republican parties with equal enthusiasm. Whichever party puts justice first before nepotism is the party that deserves to be trusted,” he wrote.
Before the arrest and trial, actor and comedian Terrence Williams wrote on Twitter, “FREE DONALD TRUMP,” then asked people to pray for the former president’s safety.
He also compared the day of his arrest to the day Martin Luther King, Jr was shot on April 4, 1968.
“This is so sad because I know Trump doesn’t deserve to be treated like this,” Williams wrote.
Memes and other facts circulated on social media including the use of hashtags and the phrase #LockHimUp, which Trump used to reveal against his former political rival, Hillary Clinton.
