Famous painter, Yusuf Gajah dies
KUALA LUMPUR: Famous painter Mohd Yusof Ismail better known as Yusof Gajah passed away at his residence in Greenwood, Gombak early Wednesday morning.
The matter was informed by the Malaysian Art Association (PeRUPA) on Facebook after being informed by Yusuf’s family members.
It is understood that Yusuf died in his sleep at the age of 68 and was noticed by his wife early this morning. The deceased’s body will be buried in his village in Negeri Sembilan.
On March 6, through his Facebook account, Yusuf, who had produced the book The Real Elephant , informed himself that he was positive for COVID-19.
The book The Real Elephant has been translated into various languages.
Yusof is scheduled to participate in the Asia Art Show which will take place in August.
He is known for his naive and abstract works that heavily highlight the image of elephants. His illustrations are widely published in children’s publications.
Yusof won various awards, including from the National Book Council for best picture book and also the Noma Concours (ACCU) award for best illustration.
Yusof was born in Johol, Negeri Sembilan on February 10, 1954.
