Enjoy nga choy kai, mention Yasmin Ahmad’s name… Michelle Yeoh express her love for Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: ” I am truly Malaysian .”
So said Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh to hundreds of fans who welcomed her home at the ‘Homecoming Public Fan Meet’ event in the nation’s capital on Tuesday.
For the Ipoh native, he never doubted the experience of growing up in Malaysia in shaping his identity and contributing to his current success.
Among them is the experience of growing up in an environment full of cultural diversity, where Michelle refers to the iconic advertisement produced by the late Yasmin Ahmad on race and religion, in conjunction with Independence Day.
“We have learned how to live together and celebrate different cultures. This makes me think globally,” he said at a press conference yesterday.
Michelle also expressed gratitude for her experience in Ipoh which she described as an environment rich in diversity.
“Growing up in Malaysia, of course I had a fierce mother and father. However, I also received a good education.
“We grew up in a ‘rich’ environment in terms of the environment, society and also the opportunity to understand diversity,” she said.
In fact, Michelle’s love for Malaysia is still evident, especially when she stole time to enjoy all her favorite dishes despite only being able to spend a few days in Ipoh last week.
“I have eaten curry laksa, nasi lemak, nga choy kai, hor fun,” she said.
Commenting on the potential of the local art industry to be lifted to the world stage, she did not reject the opportunity to get involved in developing the country’s industry.
” Why not? ” replied Michelle when asked if she would consider the opportunity to be involved in a local film.
“I want to work closely with the local studio directors here, as well as those who can bring change,” she stressed.

This is Michelle’s first time back home since making history by winning several top awards for her performance in ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’, including the Screen Actors’ Guild Award, Golden Globe Award and Academy Award.
After spending a few days in Malaysia, Michelle is scheduled to return to London to continue filming Wicked before returning to her homeland next July or August.
