KUALA LUMPUR: Chairman of the Malaysian AIDS Foundation (MAF) and Director of the Center for Excellence in AIDS Research (CERiA) Universiti Malaya, Prof Datuk Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman was appointed by the Global Commission on Drug Policy as its newest Commissioner, making her the first Malaysian to hold the position.
MAF in a statement today informed that the Global Commission on Drug Policy was created in January 2011 by a group of personalities from the United States and Europe, including former heads of state and government to support drug-related policies based on scientific evidence, human rights, public health and security.
The main objective of this Commission is to raise the discussion about drug policy reform that is more humane and effective and based on science at the international level, for the purpose of reducing the harm caused by drug use habits in addition to overly strict control policies on individuals and society.
This policy reform is also in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This Commission is chaired by the former prime minister of New Zealand, Helen Clark and the line of Global Commissioners who are members of this Commission includes Nobel Prize Winner, Jose Ramos-Horta, renowned entrepreneur Richard Bronson and other former heads of state.
According to the statement, on the global stage, Dr Adeeba was the first President of the International AIDS Society (IAS) from the Asian continent and Co-Chairman of the HIV Strategic Advisory Committee and Technical Advisor at the World Health Organization (WHO).
Dr Adeeba currently holds the position of Co-Chairman of the Science Council, World Health Organization (WHO) and Health and Human Rights Commission under the management of IAS and LANCET, a respected international medical journal.
“In April 2015, she was awarded an Honorary Degree in Law from his alumni Monash University, Australia in recognition of her excellence in medicine and public health.
“In the field of drug policy, Dr Adeeba played an important role in the efforts to reform the national drug policy leading to the implementation of a harm reduction program in 2006 for injecting drug use and preventing HIV infection among individuals who use drugs, such as needle and syringe exchange programs and therapy methadone maintenance,” according to the statement.
While welcoming Dr Adeeba as its newest commissioner, the Global Commission on Drug Policy also praised Dr Adeeba’s involvement and commitment in defending public policies that better protect human rights as well as his role in improving access to treatment, prevention and care for members of marginalized communities. in Malaysia.
