Death of Queen Elizabeth II: Prince William, Kate Middleton gets new title

LONDON: Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton received new titles following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday.

Social media accounts run by Kensington Palace, the official residence of William and Kate, have been updated to refer to them as the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge.

Traditionally, the title of Duke of Cornwall is held by the eldest son of the reigning monarch while his wife is given the title of Duchess.

Previously, William and Kate were known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, a title given in April 2011.

In addition, the couple is also expected to hold the title of ‘Prince and Princess of Wales’.

The title was previously held by Charles until his mother’s death.

William and Kate married in 2011 and have three children namely Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

In August 2022, a YouGov poll placed William and Kate as the public’s second and third favorite royals, after the Queen.

“I think William and Kate mirror the Queen and her husband Philip, when they were young.

“They gave the monarchy the modernity it might need to help it continue,” veteran royal journalist Robert Jobson told AFP .

Earlier today the media reported, Queen Elizabeth II, the longest ruler in the history of the modern world, breathed her last at noon on Thursday (local time).

Her Majesty died at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle, Scotland, Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

At the same time as the announcement, the flag in the United Kingdom (UK) was flown at half-mast, while all television and radio broadcast schedules were updated, in honor of her death.
