Communications Ministry plans to merge Nacsa, CSM for better data security

In-depth discussions going on but have not reached implementation stage yet, minister adds

KUALA LUMPUR – The Communications and Digital Ministry is discussing merging the National CyberSecurity Agency (Nacsa) and CyberSecurity Malaysia (CSM) as a step to strengthen the nation’s cybersecurity.

Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the merging of both agencies can be seen as a move in the right direction towards the ministry’s effort in establishing the Malaysian Cybersecurity Commission.

“We are having in-depth and advanced discussions regarding the merger of Nacsa and CSM, but we have not reached the stage where it can happen, for now.

“This is because we need to take the bill to Parliament, but this merger is among the efforts that we need to look into in order to ensure that the people’s data is secure so it cannot be stolen or misused for scamming activities,” he said after the Media Appreciation Night today.

He also reminded the public who might want to withdraw money for Aidilfitri preparations to be careful when receiving suspicious and unfamiliar calls.

“If anybody falls victim to scams, please contact the National Scam Response Centre at 997. If you call this number under a few hours after losing money due to a fraudulent transaction, god willing, Bank Negara will work with other banks to prevent the money from being siphoned,” he added.

On the National Journalist Day (Hawana) celebration which will take place on May 28 in Ipoh, Perak, he said he urges media practitioners to continue discussions among themselves on the future of the industry in the country.

He has also asked his deputy Teo Nie Ching to scrutinise a number of policies to ensure media rights and freedom are guaranteed, and that the welfare of practitioners is better-taken cared of.
