Chinese women raising Muslim girls receive the Maulidur Rasul Award

KUALA LUMPUR: A retired Chinese kindergarten teacher, Chee Hoi Lan was selected as the recipient of this year’s Maulidur Rasul Award.

The 83-year-old Chee was chosen for his merits in raising a Muslim child according to Islamic teachings. She received the award in the True Mother-Family Icon of Malaysia category.

The woman raised her adopted child, Rohana Abdullah who is a Muslim at the age of two months after being abandoned by her mother who was an Indonesian maid where Chee used to work.

While raising Rohana, Chee tried to ensure that Rohana did not drop out in getting an education as a Muslim by enrolling Rohana in Fardu Ain (Kafa) Basic Classes.

Rohana, who is stateless, was granted Malaysian citizenship in April after catching the attention of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Rohana is also currently studying computer science at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM).

Other recipients of the 2022 Maulidur Rasul Award include singer and host Syazrina Azman, better known as Mizz Nina; University of Malaya lecturer Azizan Baharudin; broadcast executive producer Ahmad Noor Sulaiman; Chairman of the Zikay Khay Ibrahim Foundation; and registered counselor Hushim Salleh.

Meanwhile, corporate figure Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir received the Maulidur Rasul Prime Minister Award this year.
