China ‘cancelled’ Uncle Roger

BEIJING: China is cracking down on accounts belonging to Malaysian-born comedian Nigel Ng, better known as Uncle Roger, after he mocked Beijing as a ‘spy country’ and the One Country policy towards Taiwan.

Ng’s extreme pranks paid off when he lost his Weibo account which had more than 400,000 followers.

Weibo said in a statement that the account was found to be in violation of the rules.

In addition, Ng’s account on Shanghai-based video sharing site Bilibili was also suspended.

According to social media users, Uncle Roger had to be ‘cancelled’ because of a clip shared on Twitter about a show that will be broadcast next month.

Speaking to the audience, Uncle Roger casually criticized Beijing’s surveillance network and mentioned the issue of the One China policy while joking about Taiwan.

On Wednesday, Chinese authorities fined a comedy company 14.7 million yuan (RM9.5 million) and also threatened to take stricter legal action because the joke was considered extreme against the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).
