Challenge of cooking chicken with cough medicine on TikTok, FDA warns

COOKING chicken in cough medicine not only makes the dish unappetizing but can also be very dangerous, says the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

It follows the ‘sleepy chicken’ challenge on TikTok.

Several videos that went viral challenged people to cook chicken in NyQuil cough medicine, which contains acetaminophen, dextromethorphan and doxylamine, as well as several other cough medicines.

Boiling the drug can thicken it and change its properties, the FDA said in a statement.

“Even if you don’t eat chicken, inhaling drug vapors while cooking can cause high levels of the drug to enter your body, and can harm the lungs,” the statement said.

This is not the first time the FDA has warned against the challenges of social media using non-prescription drugs.

In September 2020, a similar warning was issued by the FDA after several teenagers were reportedly hospitalized or died after participating in the “Benadryl Challenge”.
