Budget 2023: DNB to build RM1.3 bil 5G infrastructure next year

Investment to expand high-speed connectivity to 70% of populated areas

KUALA LUMPUR – Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) is planning to develop RM1.3 billion in infrastructure next year to roll out high-speed 5G broadband connectivity nationwide, said Finance Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.

Tengku Zafrul said this investment will allow DNB – which is the government’s single wholesale network for 5G services – to expand high-speed broadband connectivity to 70% of populated areas next year.

“The Keluarga Malaysia (Malaysian Family) will be able to enjoy faster internet speeds and cheaper 5G connectivity,” Tengku Zafrul said during the tabling of Budget 2023 today.

On a related matter, Tengku Zafrul said the government is looking to provide 100% fibre optic internet coverage in highly populated areas as the National Digital Network (Jendela) initiative enters its second phase.

He said the fibre optic coverage will cover 9 million premises by 2025, and involved a total investment of RM8 billion, including contributions by the private sector.

“For 2023, the Jendela initiative will prepare RM700 million to implement digital connectivity to 47 industrial areas and almost 3,700 schools.”

He added that national utility company Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) will also assist in providing internet connectivity to rural areas by optimising its power grid.

“This project will benefit 60,000 rural residents and will be supported by a matching grant of RM25 million.”
