LONDON: British Prime Minister Liz Truss on Thursday paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II for her “extraordinary achievements” as Britain’s longest-reigning monarch.

Truss, who was appointed to the post 48 hours earlier, said the country was in mourning and described Queen Elizabeth II as someone who modernized Britain.

“We are all deeply saddened by the news we have just received from Balmoral. The Queen’s death is a great shock to the country and the world.

“Queen Elizabeth II is the person who modernized Britain. Our country has grown under her rule.

“Britain is the great country it is today because of him. He came to the throne shortly after the second world war.

“Her Majesty fought for the development of the Commonwealth from a small group of seven countries to a family of 56 countries that includes every continent in the world.

“Now we are a modern, prosperous, dynamic nation. Through adversity Queen Elizabeth II gave us the stability and strength we needed.

“Her Majesty is the spirit of Great Britain, and that spirit will remain,” Truss said.

Queen Elizabeth II breathed her last at noon on Thursday (local time).

Her Majesty died at the age of 96 at Balmoral Palace, Scotland, Buckingham Palace reports.
