Beware of poisonous jellyfish at Seberang Takir Beach

Poisonous jellyfish found stranded on Seberang Takir Beach, Kuala Nerus.

KUALA TERENGGANU: The discovery of a dangerous Portuguese Man o’War jellyfish at Seberang Takir Beach, Kuala Nerus is the first case recorded at the beach this year.

Terengganu Malaysian Civil Defense Force (APM) director, Lieutenant Colonel (PA) Mohd Rosman Abdullah said the presence of the jellyfish was noticed after a visitor uploaded the discovery on social media.

Following that, according to him, some APM members have carried out monitoring at Seberang Takir Beach and managed to find the marine animal or its scientific name ‘physalia physalis’ stranded on the coast.

“So we hope the public will be more careful when visiting and having fun at Seberang Takir Beach, do not touch or hold these small blue jellyfish because they are dangerous.

“These jellyfish can paralyze victims through their stings as well as causing burns to the skin and more seriously, it can be fatal if not treated immediately,” he said here on Tuesday.

On Monday, it went viral on Facebook about the discovery of a jellyfish believed to be the Portuguese Man o’War type at Seberang Takir Beach by members of the public who visited there.

Commenting further, Mohd Rosman said, the discovery of the Portuguese Man o’ War jellyfish can be said to be recorded almost every year on the coast of this state for the past few years.

He said, as many as 12 cases of the same type of jellyfish were recorded in 2020.

“However, the public need not worry because we are constantly monitoring this matter including on other beaches as well as giving advice to beach visitors.

“We hope to make a report if anyone comes across this poisonous jellyfish so that appropriate action can be taken,” he said.
