‘Battle of Kampar’ sign was finally erected at SMK Kampar
KAMPAR: The historical information sign of the Second World War, ‘Battle of Kampar,’ was finally successfully erected at the Kampar National Secondary School (SMK) after going through various obstacles before.
The chairman of the Malayan History Group (MHG), Shaharom Ahmad, said his party’s desire to raise the history of the ‘Battle of Kampar’ as a tourism product had been achieved after a long time of trying to promote the historic location to the public.
“MHG in collaboration with SMK Kampar has successfully installed and inaugurated the new ‘Battle of Kampar’ sign in the grounds of the school’s history site.
“This new sign displays information with pictures in addition to a simple map that is easy to understand regarding the ‘Battle of Kampar’ which took place on 30 Dec 1941 to 2 Jan 1942,” he said when met by the media after the inauguration of the sign yesterday.
According to him, last August the party agreed and accepted the decision by removing the sign that was placed at the battle site in Green Ridge here, after an issue arose regarding the presence of the sign.
The 6.47 hectare battle site is evidence of a fierce battle between 1,500 British soldiers who were also joined by Indian, Sikh and Gurkha soldiers against 4,000 Japanese soldiers for four days and four nights.
The battle resulted in the deaths of 150 British soldiers and 500 Japanese soldiers who were buried in one place in the same area, known as Green Ridge.
Previously, it went viral on social media showing the information sign showing the map and the description ‘Battle of Kampar’ had been removed, even the sign was stolen by an irresponsible party early last January.
Shaharom said that with the notice boards involved, visitors will be aware of the importance and relevance of the history of World War II in the country.
“We also hope that it can add value to the historical location and thus attract more tourists to visit the Kampar district,” he said.
