Australian tourist killed in shark attack in New Caledonia
BANGKOK: An Australian tourist died after being attacked by a shark in the French Pacific territory of New Caledonia, in the South Pacific.
The incident happened on Sunday afternoon when the man was swimming about 150 meters from the beach in Noumea, dpa reported citing local broadcaster 1ere Nouvelle Caledonie.
Two rescuers managed to bring the victim to land but efforts to save him failed due to severe injuries to the victim’s legs.
Following the incident, Mayor Sonia Lagarde ordered the closure of all beaches in and around Noumea until further notice, according to a statement on Monday.
Drones were also used to track the sharks.
The type of shark that attacked the man has not been identified.
New Caledonia is located approximately 1,200 kilometers east of Australia.
