Astro Group CEO Henry Tan retires effective 31 Jan 2023
KUALA LUMPUR: Astro Malaysia Holdings Berhad (Astro) has announced the retirement of its Group Chief Executive Officer, Henry Tan Poh Hock, effective January 31, 2023.
He will be replaced by Astro Group Chief Operating Officer and Pay Television Chief Executive Officer, Euan Daryl Smith.
Smith joined Astro in 2020 after holding several senior positions at broadcasters Sky United Kingdom and Germany, as well as Fox USA.
Chairman of the Astro Group, Tunku Ali Redhauddin Ibni Tuanku Muhriz said, Henry will always be remembered as an individual who successfully transformed local films into success in cinemas, as well as building content series that are now the basis of Astro’s identity.
“Henry has been a leader who inspires all Astro people, he steered the company through several different business phases and managed to record many important achievements in the media and entertainment industry as a whole,” he said.
In a statement today, Astro said, Tan will continue to serve as a Group Advisor to continue to help empower content distribution.
Meanwhile, Tan expressed his gratitude for being given the opportunity to serve the country’s broadcasting industry for almost 15 years.
“I would like to thank the dedication of the Astro team which is the basis of our success in achieving many things – the introduction of high definition (HD) broadcasting, freemium multi-channel NJOI TV, as well as increasing the position of Astro’s content – Signatures and Originals , launching and expanding the Astro education brand Tutor TV to 5 million reach, also Astro First, the largest ‘home cinema’ channel in Malaysia.
“All these play an important role in strengthening Astro’s position as an entertainment destination for Malaysians,” said Tan.
Meanwhile, Smith said this latest announcement is in line with Astro’s principle to remain flexible in growing with the times.
“I would like to thank the Board of Directors for the opportunity to lead Astro to the next level, and to Henry for all the support he has given me as a valued colleague and friend.
“I look forward to working with him in his new role,” added Tan.
