Arrested for parodying Salt Bae
HANOI: For making a parody of Turkiye celebrity chef, Nusret Gokce or better known as Salt Bae, a noodle seller in Vietnam is facing punishment after he was arrested for anti-national propaganda.
Bui Tuan Lam, 38, shared the video footage last year and most social media users saw it as a satire on government ministers enjoying a 24-carat gold-plated steak priced at US$1,725 (RM7,759).
The price of the menu, however, provoked criticism from many parties due to the fact that most of the people in Hanoi live in poverty.
In addition, social media users also disputed the price of the steak which was claimed to be much more expensive than the monthly salary received by the minister between US$600 (RM2,698) and US$800 (RM3,598).
The ‘Green Onion Bae’ parody was uploaded a few days after the Minister of Public Security, General To Lam dined on the luxury dish at a restaurant in London.
Tuan Lam’s wife confirmed that her husband was arrested by the authorities last week and the authorities also returned to search their home.
“We have been prepared for the punishment that will be imposed since Tuan Lam was called by the police in November last year,” said his wife.
It is understood that Tuan Lam was detained under Article 117, a clause that stipulates the act of releasing or disseminating information against the government as a criminal act.
According to the police, they have repeatedly warned Tuan Lam not to post content that insults the leader’s honor and reputation.
