Ancient Assyrian palace found
MOSUL: Archaeologists on a mission in Mosul, Iraq found an ancient Assyrian palace in the position below the tomb of Prophet Yunus.
Excavation work is currently in full swing, and the team has managed to map out the dimensions of the palace including the throne room.
The mission led by groups from Germany and several other countries was mobilized a few years ago after it was reported that there were ruins destroyed by the Daish militant group.
Daish militants reportedly blew up the tomb of Prophet Yunus in 2014 after taking control of the city.
The group previously excavated a tunnel into the side of the hill below the temple which led to the discovery of the palace of an ancient Assyrian king who ruled some 2,700 years ago.
Now the tunnel is being used by archaeologists to gather information about the palace.
Ancient artifacts and winged bulls and lions were found in the tunnel and are thought to be part of King Esarhaddon’s palace.
Excavation work is expected to last until the end of this year.
