AFF Cup: Hannah Yeoh clarified the issue of empty seats at the Bukit Jalil Stadium

KUALA LUMPUR: Minister of Youth and Sports, Hannah Yeoh, today explained that 21,000 seats at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium had to be vacated following the installation of an international-scale concert stage structure.

She said the installation of the stage structure at the concert location had been pre-ordered by the organizer of the famous artist from Taiwan, Jay Chou since March 2019, also involving a large number of crew.

Therefore, she hopes that football fans can accept the fact that it is impossible to change the situation at the stadium for the first semi-final of the ASEAN Football Federation Cup (AFF) 2022 between Malaysia and Thailand, this Saturday.

“I have received an explanation (that) this installation work involves 14 days involving 500 crews, 185 international crews entering Malaysia just for installation, 45 heavy machinery, 200 units of loudspeakers and 800 units of lights. So it is not like a normal stage tent that where we can install (or) open at will.

“So both events have quite strong supporters. So we want to give all the support to Harimau Malaya, this Saturday, and also the concerts that have been booked in advance,” she said.

Yesterday, FAM Secretary General Noor Azman Rahman informed that 21,000 seats had to be vacated because they were obstructed by the structure of the Jay Chou concert stage which was in the process of being installed.

However, the vacancy of 21,000 seats has received criticism from football fans in the country.

Meanwhile, Hannah said the situation would remain the same if Malaysia qualified for the final stage with the second final scheduled to take place on 16 January.

“This corporation (Malaysia Stadium Corporation) has made efforts to plan to see how we want to accommodate everyone… so that (final) will continue but in the current situation where the areas will be blocked.

“…because the most suitable location for FAM (Malaysian Football Association) is here (Bukit Jalil National Stadium) because there is public transport and a large number of seats and this is an unavoidable situation because (there are) advance reservations ,” she said.

Jay Chou’s concert is scheduled to take place on Jan 15.
