A year of waiting, Michelle Yeoh brought the Oscar home to Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: After a year of waiting with full of hope, Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh finally brought home the Oscar trophy to her homeland.

Describing the success as a victory for all Malaysians, Michelle tearfully spoke about the difficulties she went through to make a name for herself on the world stage.

“A year of waiting without knowing, just hoping, until the end of the year when our chances of being nominated started to be talked about.

“Thank you for being with me on this journey. I feel your support throughout this difficult and lonely journey,” she said in a press conference on Tuesday.

Asked about her experience growing up in Malaysia, Michelle said that her success, among other things, stems from the opportunity to grow up with cultural diversity, the beauty of the environment and a good level of education.

“Growing up in this environment made me more open.

“We have to accept the fact that we are different. That’s the beauty of this world when our differences make us complex and dynamic,” she said.

In fact, Michelle also called on local art industry activists to take the opportunity to celebrate Malaysia’s uniqueness in works that can be enjoyed by the global market.

“We often put ourselves in our comfort zone and only think about our market. When we produce a film, it has to be global.

“We need to create opportunities and platforms to highlight the talents that are available. I want to work closely with the studio heads here, as well as those who can make a difference,” said Michelle.

Last March, Michelle made history by winning the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Everything Everywhere All At Once.
