A welder was jailed for 6 months for uploading bad communications against the Sultan of Perak

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sessions Court here today sentenced a welder to six months in prison for making and sending offensive communications against the Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah via his Twitter account, in December last year.

Judge Priscilla Hemamalini Nadarajan handed down the sentence to Mohd Masri Md Darus, 36, after he pleaded guilty to the charge and ordered the accused to serve his prison sentence starting today.

Mohd Masri is accused of committing the act through his Twitter application by using the Twitter profile page “@Muhammad65J” with the intention of hurting others at 8.21 am, 22 Dec 2022.

The message was then read at the Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department Office, Wangsa Maju, here at 5pm, 3 Jan last.

The charge is presented in accordance with Section 233 (1) (a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and can be punished according to Section 233 (3) of the same act which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment for up to one year or both and can be fined a further RM1,000 for each day the offense continues after conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Ilya Ellyna Nor Azmal asked for an appropriate punishment taking into account the fact that the content uploaded by the accused was ugly and the language used was impolite.

“The prosecution is asking for appropriate punishment to teach a lesson not only to the accused, but also to the general public to be more careful when uploading messages on social media,” he said.

Mohd Masri, who was not represented by a lawyer, appealed for a light sentence on the grounds of incapacity and the need to take care of his ailing mother.
