A fund to help the production of films with a national element is created

PUTRAJAYA: The government will create a fund to help the production of local films with national elements and elements of unity in the near future, said Communications and Multimedia Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa.

Speaking to reporters after launching the OST and trailer of the film ‘ Seratus ‘ here today, Annuar said he had held discussions with the Ministry of Finance, to obtain an allocation of RM50 million for the purpose.

“I am working and praying as soon as possible.

“I think film industry activists need more help, not just DKD (Digital Content Fund) and FIMI (Film Production Incentives in Malaysia), because we want to encourage the production of various film genres and celebrate those who have creative ideas,” he said.

Understanding that the cost of filming a movie is high, Annuar said filmmakers need to be helped and supported from the initial process of film production, to ensure that it is of high quality and comparable to foreign films.

“I’m trying to see the possibility of making something more flexible, so Finas (National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia) can choose the films that should be given this special support (fund),” he said.

Apart from funds, Annuar said the success factor of the production and quality of a local film depends on the acting, script and marketing strategy.

“I believe the local film industry can be raised to a better level, provided that the producers and parties involved must be willing to do something out of the ordinary,” he said.

Regarding the 32nd Malaysian Film Festival (FFM) to be held in Melaka on December 2, Annuar said the festival has so far been able to attract participation from 17 foreign film production companies.

“This participation will of course be attended by film producers and directors from outside, so this will be a meeting place between them and local film industry activists, thereby promoting local films,” he said.
