681 PoP will be built in Sarawak within three years – Annuar Musa
MIRI: A total of 681 Point of Presence (PoP) fiber optic network hubs will be built in Sarawak within three years.
Communications and Multimedia Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa said the initiative involving an allocation of RM1 billion will benefit more than 73,548 premises including residential houses.
He said the Letter of Acceptance (SST) for the PoP construction project had also been given to a local company in Bumi Kenyalang on Oct 6.
Annuar said that the effort was taken by the Federal Government because there are still many areas in Sarawak that are in dire need of high-speed landline internet networks and services.
“With the SST letter issued, we hope this will enable the company to offer high-speed Internet packages at a low price of as low as RM45 per month with good service quality,” he said at a press conference here today.
He also said the PoP coverage distance is around 3 kilometers and those within that distance can take advantage of good broadband access.
He said the PoP location will also involve public places such as near schools, government premises, business and commercial areas.
In total, a total of 4,323 PoPs have been planned to be built under the 12th Malaysia Plan (RMK12) in locations near rural schools including 47 in industrial areas.
At least 432,300 premises will receive high-speed broadband services when this project is completed by the end of RMK12, which is in 2025.
